On 16 March, in London, Eugenija Sutkienė was awarded as the European Managing Partner of the Year in The Lawyer European Awards 2017. E. Sutkienė is the Managing Partner of TGS Baltic, a leading law firm in the Baltics, and has worked in commercial law for over 30 years. This is the first time when the European Managing Partner title was given to a representative from the Baltic States.

“I am very pleasantly surprised with this honourable award. It is a great acknowledgement of my efforts, kind of an Oscar in legal career”, Eugenija Sutkienė says. Asked what helped her to get this award, E. Sutkienė mentions a strong and professional team. “I am grateful for this award to my team both in Lithuania and in the Baltic States, as I received it only due to its professionalism, initiative and commitment. A strong team and management based on a long-term vision and mission, that are centred on our clients and their needs, helped to ensure the sustainable development of our law firm and leading positions in the commercial law market of the Baltic States.”

TGS Baltic’s corporate deal of the year is the second in Europe

Law firm TGS Baltic was very close to another important award – the European Corporate Deal of the Year. In this category, advising company CITY SERVICE on the establishment of a European company (Societas Europaea), the admission of its shares to trading on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and delisting them from the Nasdaq OMX Vilnius, was nominated. According to the jury, the complexity and significance of this transaction made strong competition for the Corporate deal of the year category winner law firm A&L Goodbody, remaining in the second place by a limited margin.

In 2016, law firm TGS Baltic also participated in the following exceptional projects:

  • Advising bank Swedbank in acquiring the retail banking business of AS Danske Bank;
  • Advising bank Snoras in selling the loan portfolio to the consortium represented by Deutsche Bank;
  • Advising AB Klaipėdos Nafta in implementing the LNG terminal project which ensured alternative gas supply to Lithuania and independence from Gazprom;
  • Representing Lithuania in arbitration proceedings against Gazprom (claimed amount: EUR 1.4 billion).

The Lawyer European Awards now are in their eighth year. The Lawyer is a prestigious, specialized, international publication devoted to the legal market and the first to establish awards to reward and celebrate excellence across the European legal market. Award winners are selected by the jury made up of the managing partners of international law firms and in-house lawyers from large corporations.
