TGS Baltic receives continuing high rankings from IFLR1000 in Baltic countries

IFLR1000 (International Financial Law Review) is the guide of world’s leading financial law firms. The guide analysis and ranks more than 120 jurisdictions in the world.

The 2013 edition of the IFLR 1000 ranks TGS Baltic Estonia in the top tier in the area of financial and corporate practice.

As stated in the guide: “Led by Risto Vahimets, Hannes Vallikivi and Toomas Taube, the firm has a good mix of banking and corporate clients and has been active in M&A of late. The firm has also been looking to expand its tax practice with a host of new Scandinavian clients. It's been a busy year in M&A for the firm with leading lawyer Risto Vahimets leading teams on the key deals. One of the highlights in the editon is one of the largest M&A deals in the Baltics in 2011 where Risto Vahimets advised the North European private equity group, EQT Infrastructure Fund, on its €200 million acquisition of heating services company Fortum Termest. Other highlights mentioned include instructing Tele2 Eesti on its €25million acquisition of telecoms group Televõrgu, and in a similar deal assisting Webmedia on a 97% stake in the Finnish software company CCC Corporation. This stands as a rare example of an Estonian company acquiring a Finnish company and producing the largest IT firm in the Baltics.

Pointed up on the firm’s financial services side are Hannes Vallikivi alongside Andres Siigur, who worked with a number of leading Nordic and international banks in the renewables and manufacturing sectors. One interesting project involved an innovative trade finance facility on taking security over cargo flows”.

TGS Baltic Latvia is indicated in the newest IFLR edition as a notable firm. “Name partner Ivars Grunte leads regional firm TGS Baltic in Latvia. The firm welcomed onboard no less than four new partners in early 2012 in the forms of Andra Rubene, Inese Hazenfusa, Linda Strause and Agnese Hartpenga”.

Deals mentioned in the guide are in the area of corporate practice: “on the corporate front last year provided due diligence advice to the likes of Nordic Capital Fund V and Moller's Baltic real estate and auto arms on their respective potential acquisitions. The team also assisted KPMG as the insolvency administrator of Latvijas Krājbanka”.

IFLR ranks TGS Baltic Lithuania in the second tier in banking and finance and also second tier in mergers and acquisitions practice.

The Lithuanian firm is lauded in the edition for “Having pulled in another year of impressive mandates in both the financing and corporate side. Head of banking and finance Vilius Bernatonis is recognised by peers as a ‘top rate lawyer’, with lawyers working there described as ‘competent, service-minded and hands-on’. Marius Matonis heads up the M&A team and according to one client: ‘Marius and his team is very capable and helpful in private equity transactions, not only offering high quality legal advice but is also very creative and innovative in negotiations, structuring transactions and coming up with non-standard solutions. In my view, they are one of the most experienced legal M&A and private equity teams’ ”. Other leading lawyers in the field are Eugenija Sutkiene, Vidmantas Drizga and Jonas Pilkauskas.
